A Trip to the Symphony

The kids and I took a trip into St. Louis, with some other homeschooling families, to see the Symphony and the Really Inventive Stuff Company use props and puppets to perform the Toy Symphony which was composed by Leopold Mozart (yes, Amadeus' Dad) and Peter and the Wolf which was composed by Sergei Prokofiev.

First, the orchestra was accompanied by some interesting sounding instruments from this contraption during the Toy Symphony:

That was pretty funny.

Then they began Peter and the Wolf.  The narrator in the front used a lot of different props as the animals in the story. For the tree he used a coat rack. For a bird he used a yellow silk tied to a wire.  For a duck he used a feather duster.

Below is the duck (the feather duster) swimming in the pond in front of the orchestra.

For a cat he used a black handbag which had some whiskers and a tale.  For the wolf he used a grey suitcase decked out with ears and a tail.

The suitcase opened up to eat the duck and revealed a complete set of teeth!

For the hunters he used toilet plungers as guns, for Peter he put on a baseball cap, and for the grandfather he used a cane.

We all really enjoyed the performance.  It was a lot of fun to watch and see what props he would use when he introduced a new character. The St. Louis Symphony does these Kidz Concerts a few times a year. We may have to go check out another one sometime!
