Meet the Math Gnomes

On Monday, we met some new friends and learned about King Equals and the four math process gnomes.
King Equals job is to teach and train the four process gnomes.  Their names are: Plus, Minus, Times and Divided By (most people call her Divide).  Every day King Equals expects his gnomes to bring him twelve precious stones from the mining caves, making a total of 48 each day.  He needs the stones to use for trading all over the world, and for energetic use for helping the sick.  He knows that Plus and Times will bring him more than they need to, and Minus will not bring nearly enough without the help of divide.
Plus is a jolly gnome, but doesn't move very fast unless he's motivated to collect something.  He loves adding things together.
Minus is a grumpy gnome.  He is thin and his blue robes hang and trip him up.  All his pockets and pouches have holes in them so he is always complaining that he doesn't have enough jewels.
Times is a very happy gnome who loves everyone she meets.  She does her job as a math gnome very well, but can get distracted at times.  She gets her collecting done early in the day, so she can run off and play with her friends.
Divide is kind and organized, but can be a bit bossy at times.  She doesn't like to listen to Minus complaining all day, so she shares her jewels with him.

In our story on Monday, We used glass beads (from the craft store) as jewels and I told Grant how Plus brought King Equals 18 stones, Times brought 18, Minus only brought 2 that were given to him by Divide who brought 10.  We counted out how it still worked out to be 48 jewels.
After that, we drew a picture of the gnomes in our lesson books, and I wrote out a few problems for Grant to do.

On Tuesday, we talked more about Plus. Grant drew this picture in his lesson book, and copied this verse about Plus.  His other name is Addition.  When his Mom is mad at him, she uses his full name, "Plus Addition, get in here!"  He also worked out some addition problems.

On Wednesday, we picked the number 12, and using our "jewels" we figured out all the different ways we could make 12 by adding and multiplying.  Then we talked about what would happen if we divided up 12, or substacted from 12.

On Thursday, we talked more about Minus, also known by his full name of Minus Subtraction.

In preparation for his space party, Grant wanted to make a rocket ship shirt.

Co-op was cancelled this week, so we spent Friday morning getting ready for Grant's Birthday party.
